For Another Time

A storage chest designed for a variety of uses. The collapsible top is intended to hold a book or perhaps sheet music but could just as readily display artwork. And the drawers? They are reminiscent of a storage cabinet for maps but are proportioned for larger items. A pair of sliding doors cover an open storage space. This is a simple design with fine details: dovetailed corners at the base and top, brass pins supporting the lid, and wood handles.

This piece is executed primarily in swiss pear, a hardwood with a smooth and soft tactile quality. Swiss pear is not a common material, so veneer, both machine and shop cut, is used on the larger faces to conserve wood. The drawer bodies are made from maple, the drawer handles from santos mahogany, and the white inlays and accents from figured sycamore.
